The Library

For nearly 100 years, the Orange County Library System has been a source of enrichment for its community. From its humble origins in the 1920s, when retired police Captain Charles Albertson donated 20,000 books to the city of Orlando to establish a permanent lending library for its citizens, the library has existed to improve the quality of life in the greater Orlando area by providing people with resources that can help them lead more fulfilling, productive lives. The library circulates a collection of more than 1.6 million items, and while core services like providing access to reading materials and supporting literacy in the community are still vital, the Orange County Library System focuses on anticipating the needs of customers to help them adapt to the changing world. It challenges people to think of a library as not just a place for children or college students – it asks them to think of the library as a place where everybody can come to learn, grow and connect with the community. The Orlando Public Library, which is the Orange County Library System’s main location, is home to the Melrose Center, an innovative hub that is home to state-of-the-art audio, photography and video studios, as well as collaborative workstations and public computers loaded with design software. The Orange County Library System’s focus on innovation in library service earned it a 2018 National Medal from the IMLS, as well as numerous awards and accolades over the years from local, regional and national organizations.

The County / Community

Orange County, Florida is one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions. Its population, as of 2018, was approximately 1.3 million people, and its best-known city is Orlando. In 2019, U.S. News and World Report named the area one of the top 100 places to live, citing its growing job market, quality of life and recreational opportunities as some of its most notable qualities. While most people who think of Orlando immediately think of its theme parks, there’s far more to be explored than many people are aware. From its James Beard-nominated restaurants to the stunning Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts to the wealth of outdoor opportunities, Orange County has something for everyone. In addition, the 66 million visitors who flock to the region each year to visit the attractions help sustain the area’s economic development and lay the foundation for a booming future.
